Driving with your dog may be a regular occurrence or maybe you’ve never done it before. Either way, going on a long road trip is a whole different experience. Here are some things to consider before you leave:
Used to riding
If your dog isn’t used to going to the vet or the park across town by way of the car, it’s time to get him as used to it as possible before you go. Some dogs also don’t like going in cars so just as you did in training you will have to use association. If your dog knows that he’s going someplace fun like the park, he won’t have as much anxiety about getting in the car.
Do research
Before you make your trip there are some things that you need to plan out. Plot out points along your route every 3-5 hours where your dog can relieve himself, stretch out his legs and drink some water. Know if the hotels that you are staying at will allow dogs as well. You also should know some veterinary hospitals along the route just in case anything should happen.
Go prepared
When you go, you will need to be extra prepared. In addition to food, you should also bring a travel water bowl, dog toys, dog blanket, leash, treats, etc. Having these things will make your travels easier. Remember that it’s better to have too much rather than too little.
